Sports Report 2017-18

w/e 6th July 2018

The last couple of weeks have seen both the girls and boys play their last matches in their respective football leagues. The girls played brilliantly against Alveston, losing 4 – 1 but showing superb sportsmanship throughout. They finished fifth in their league overall. They are a talented team, arguably the most skilful in the league, however this year we have lacked a goal scorer and this has affected our final position. The boys have played two more games, losing 5 – 2 to Coughton and winning 5 – 2 against Bidford. We are awaiting the final positions but having only lost one match we hope to finish in the top three.

Yesterday, nine children from Claverdon went to the South Warwickshire athletics finals, representing the Henley area, to compete against the best of the best! It was uncomfortably hot but they gave their all. We don’t have the final results yet but we do know that the Year 3 girls and boys relay teams came first (well done Hermione, Izzy and Lucas).

w/e 15th June 2018

On Monday, our boys’ football team travelled to Alcester where they fulfilled two more league matches. They drew 0-0 with St Mary’s RC Studley and beat St Nicholas 1-0. This leaves them still unbeaten and with a chance of winning the league. They also played a friendly match against Mappleborough Green and having already beaten them in the league, beat them again 4-0.

On Tuesday, our girls’ cricket team competed in a tournament at Leamington Cricket Club. They were the only school to bowl overarm and finished as runners up. The following day, the boys also took part in the cricket festival and finished a respectable fourth out of twelve schools.

w/e 25th May 2018

The boys finally played their first league football match of the season and started with a bang, beating Mappleborough Green 6-3 having gone 3-1 down. We now have seven more matches to squeeze in before the end of term starting with a home match against Tanworth (the current champions) after half term.

A team of children from Year Three and Four played a friendly football match against Mappleborough Green. After an exciting match full of goals, Claverdon won by eight goals to four.

 Parent Coaches

We would like to recognise and thank the contribution of our volunteer parent coaches who help us to offer such a wide range of sports opportunities in school. Mrs Townend runs Senior Netball, Mr Hutchison leads our boys team practise, Mr Folwell and Mr Thomas take Senior Girls Football and Mrs Knight and Mrs Husband have started Junior Netball.

w/e 18th May 2018

It has been a busy week for our girls’ football teams with our Year 5/6 team drawing 1-1 with Bidford in their penultimate league match and finishing as runners up in the ABS tournament in Alcester on Thursday. Our Year 3/4 team also played against Bidford, winning 8-0.

Congratulations to the tag rugby team who won the South Warwickshire Tag Rugby Tournament for the first time ever! They put on a truly remarkable display of speed and agility which saw them win every match comfortably to take home the shield. The trophy cabinet is slowly filling up again!

w/e 4th May 2018

The girls football team were unlucky to lose their league match 1-0 against Temple Grafton on Monday. Claverdon piled on the pressure but were unable to score against the visitors’ excellent goalkeeper.

We took two teams to the Year 4 ABS football tournament on Thursday. The yellow team lost just one match and won the rest comfortably with nearly every player getting on the score sheet. They finished a respectable second in their group. The blue team drew one and won the others and were delighted to find themselves in the final where they met Welford. A stunning free kick from Oscar gave Claverdon the lead with a minute to go. They held on until the final whistle to take home this trophy for the first time.

w/e 27th April 2018

Some of the younger children were involved in competitive football this week with the Year 3/4 team winning the South Warwickshire Cup down at Ajax Park on Wednesday and a young Key Stage One team putting up a tremendous fight in the ABS tournament at Alcester Town Football Club on Thursday, just missing out on a place in the final.

w/e 29th March 2018

On Monday, Year Five competed in the annual High Five competition at Princethorpe College. They played with great sportsmanship and scored lots of goals (thanks Jamie) finishing fourth over all.

The girls football team beat Thomas Jolyffe 5-0 yesterday in a terrific, game at Claverdon. Goals came from Eva, Lucy and Libby. Thanks to the Clover Club supporters who cheered them on!

There will be no finals of the swimming gala this year but congratulations to Serena and Natasha who would have qualified. They both finished second overall at Stratford, Serena by 0.08 of a second!

Cross Country

Last Saturday, 16 children from Years 3 to 6 competed in the Cross Country event at Stratford. In spite of the cold, wet weather and the muddy conditions, they performed admirably. The Year 3 girls were particularly well supported and we are delighted to announce that Izzy came 3rd and the team of Izzy, Scarlet and Lois won the team award with 19 points.

Cross Country

A busy week of sport saw a team of Year 5 girls compete in the first cross country race of the season. They performed admirably with Lottie finishing 9th, Eve 11th, Serena 25th and Emily 26th. The next event will be at the Stratford Recreation Ground on Saturday 18th November starting at 11am. It will be open to all boys and girls from Year 3 to Year 6 and anyone may enter.

On Monday, we entered a mixed Year 3/4 five a side football tournament at Kineton High School. Claverdon played some super football in very strong winds but were unable to find the back of the net on this occasion.

On Wednesday, two Claverdon teams with boys from Year 4, 5 and 6 entered the ESFA Under 11s area tournament down the road at Ajax Park. The Blue Team put up a great fight against some big, strong opposition and came away with a win, a draw and 3 losses.. The Yellow team were delighted and surprised to hear they had won their group and were through to the semi-finals. A thrilling match ensued against The Willows, but one goal was enough for the team from Stratford to make it into the finals against Wellesbourne, last year’s champions.

After school today, we will be taking two teams of girls from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 to compete in the ESFA Under 11s area tournament. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy the competition.
