KS1 Phonics & Reading Schemes
Reading is taught initially by building on letter sound recognition using a phonics programmes 'Jolly Phonics' and 'Phonics Play'.
The introduction of the letters and blends of letters is taught under the guidance of the Government ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme.
Our children then move onto the Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme. Phonics teaching is introduced in the Reception class and consolidated throughout Key Stage 1. Children in KS1 have personal spelling journals as part of their homework to support the ‘Letters and Sounds’ phonic work covered in school. Opportunities are also given during Key Stage 1 and 2 to use additional phonic programmes if necessary, for example ‘Spellwise,’ which provides for further consolidation of phonics. Some pupils undertake specific intervention programmes if they experience difficulties with reading.
